Dunsborough overcome Margies

Dunsborough 2 beat Margaret River 0

The rare taste of success was a heady brew for the second week in succession when Nina’s Dunsborough Diamonds advance to the next round of the Pioneer Cup with a 2-0 victory over Margaret River at the Bunbury Superdrome on Sunday.

Again it was the finishing touch of striker Narelle Jeffery that made the difference scoring goals, one early and one late in the game.

It was unfortunate that Margaret River could only field ten players without the benefit of substitutions in a competition that allows rotating substitutes.

However, the Diamonds can only play the team that takes the field and Margaret River, under the circumstances, organised their side to restrict their opposition with the hope of pinching a result.

The job was made easier for Dunsborough when in the second minute Jeffery found herself through in a one on one with the goalkeeper to score.

“We had most of the running and we should have done better with some of the chances we created,” said coach Steve Palmer.

“Missing chances”, is becoming a mournful cry at the Dunsborough club in recent weeks both in the men’s and women’s competitions.

It is a weakness that requires a remedy with the second-half of the competition, the business end of the league season, to start on Sunday.

The Diamonds could claim that on three occasions they hit the bar twice from Melissa Harding and Jeffery while Jules Olsen and daughter Emma scraped the post with shots that could have easily gone in.

“Defensively we didn’t have much to worry about though once again Chelsie Winchcombe was strong with Dene Mayers and Anna McBride snuffing out any danger that threatened,” said Palmer.

With time running out the Diamonds got some reward for effort when Emma Olsen clipped a perfect square pass to Jeffery who guided the ball home.
