Women gaining strength

Improvement was evident for the Dunsborough Towners women’s side when they lost 6-0 to the powerful Bunbury Dynamo side on the Women’s Premier League clash at the Dunsborough Playing Fields on Sunday.

The week before they had succumbed 9-1 to the same side in the South West Times knockout cup at the same venue.

It was the improvement that was a positive for the home side that counts at this stage as the new line-up settles down.

Since the start of the season it is clear that Dunsborough has a well balanced combination with Belinda Perna outstanding as the director of the defence, Joey Schleuter and Emma Olsen solid in midfield while Chelcie Winchcombe, Amelia Lotze, Mia Holtz and Emily Mathews, to name just a few, consistently perform well.

Recently the French sisters, Kate and Erin have returned to add depth while, hopefully, Jules Olsen will soon recover from injury to take her much needed place in midfield.

The problem in attack remains with plenty of endeavour but no one with a shot to test the opposition’s goalkeeper.

Emma Olsen and Schleuter have that ingredient but coach Martyn Mulley will have to rob Peter to pay Paul from midfield to attack to solve the problem.

That is unless he can attract a specialist striker to the club, something most clubs in the competition are attempting.

It is a little unfair to judge Dunsborough against Dynamo, the powerhouse of the women’s competition, when they have performed well in the first three league matches of the season against Bunbury United, Collie and Harvey.

This week they meet Margaret River away and again it will be a tough match with River having a strong start to the season.
