The introduction of former State and East Fremantle Tricolore striker Mike Smith was a surprise inclusion in the Dunsborough Towners Reserve side that defeated Dalyellup 3-1 at Dalyellup on Sunday. Smith, who at 50 years of age has just competed for Australia in a veteran’s tournament in Asia, was one of the potent goalscorers in Perth’s State league 20 years ago. While he didn’t have a lot to do in his debut appearance Smith had a hand in all three goals and with a few more matches under his belt could do much to boost the team’s ambitions for a top two spot. Like their first team in the following match, Dalyellup got off to a flying start without threatening a breakthrough. The chances started to appear for Dunsborough as the half progressed, some that should have been put away, especially in the last ten minutes of the half, though credit must go to Dalyellup’s defence in restricting the Towners attack. The all important first goal came in the 40th minute when Smith set up Lukas Diwersy with a neat short pass who scythed through three defenders before breaking into the open and carefully slotting an angled shot inside the far post. Diwersy, playing his last game for the club, was through again in the 45th minute with a mazy run but couldn’t settle to get the shot away. His attempted shot sliced off across the face of goal with Smith, and Mick Finney having quick chances to turn the ball into the net but effecting only air shots. The Towners with the aid of a strong breeze spurned three early second-half chances before Dalyellup levelled the scores in the 65th minute. It was a goal against the run of play but one that provided concern to the Towners pressing to preserve an unbeaten six game run. It was a perfectly placed corner by Smith two minutes later that calmed the Towners nerves and re-establish the lead with Mark Ferguson “Chicken Treat’s Man of the Match” heading home under pressure. Then with time running out, Smith moved wide down the left in the 86th minute before passing to Tony Plumb who quickly found Finney whose timely pass picked out an unmarked Ferguson who guided home from inside the penalty area.
