Dunsborough power up for Collie

The Dunsborough Towners season starts this Sunday when they clash with Collie in the second round of the South West Premier League football season in Collie.

In a disastrous opening round two weeks ago Dunsborough’s three senior teams, Premier League, Reserves and Women, lost to Bunbury United 6-1, 3-0 and 1-0.

The club has decided to ignore that day and concentrate on the rest of the season.

“We had so many players missing for various reasons that we couldn’t field two full men’s teams and were forced to play most of the second-half of the Premier League encounter with ten men,” said club president Tony Plumb.

“This week they will all be back on deck and on the showing at pre-season training we should have a competitive side to provide any opposition with food for thought”.

The Easter break was fortuitous for a number of players who picked up knocks in the game against Bunbury. However, there are still question marks hanging over one or two players for this week’s game.

The 2008 South West Association’s “player of the year” Graeme Copeman has been working up North and will be back for the Collie game, but he will have a searching test over his fitness.

He suffered a crippling ankle injury in the Margaret River carnival in the middle of March and if there is any lingering doubt he should be rested for a further week.

Striker Richard Olsen has a knee ligament strain and needs careful assessment before selection, while Adam Shaw appears to have recovered from a thigh crass burn picked up in the Margaret River carnival.

Probably the biggest loss will be right full-back Cid Richards who has to go to Adelaide for two weeks.

The powerful midfielder Neil Muckles is back from the North for at least two games and the reliable Stuart Gidley and Joe Peachey will return to strengthen the midfield.

These additions should flow on to the reserve side that will be without the steadying influence of Wayne Perna who regularly visits Africa with his employment.

Much interest will focus on the Towners women’s team that looked well balanced and in control of Bunbury United before slipping to a 1-0 defeat in the last minutes of the game.
