We aim To WinThursday, 31 May 2007 01:50 “The target is to win the second division of the South West Soccer Association competition this year”.That was the clear message from the new coach of the Dunsborough Towners Football Club Steve Palmer when he took over the duties of guiding the first team in 2007. Palmer, who has taken over coaching the first team from club president Tony Plumb, considers anything less than the second division premiership would be well short of the potential of the players under his command. “Dunsborough has enjoyed a successful period in it’s formation years and the club has advanced from tentative formation steps of three seasons ago to win the fourth division league and cup double in 2006”, said Palmer. “There were moves to force us into the first division for the forthcoming season that would have been detrimental to the development of the club. “I expect us to be worthy competitors in the second division and to be competing in the Premier league in the next couple of years”. Palmer arrived in WA in 1998 from Manchester in the UK where he was member of the Manchester City Junior Blues and was for a time on the books of Manchester City itself. He has been with Dunsborough Towners since its formation three years ago. Palmer considers that Dunsborough has some talented youth that will form the basis of the club in the next few years while there are senior players who have proved themselves in the past and will be a vital ingredient in guiding the younger players. Unfortunately he will be without two of the stars in 2006 in midfield striker Mike Doyle and midfielder Tomohiro Inagaki. Doyle won the fourth division best players award in 2006 while Tomohiro was a vital contributor in the midfield. There was a suggestion last week that Doyle, who is now having a look at Queensland, could be back in Dunsborough before the season is not too old. The same cannot be said for the popular Inagaki whose teaching visa runs out early in March forcing him to return to Japan. “I would like to stay and I am looking at possibilities that might allow me and my family to come back,” said Inagaki. The return of both would increase Dunsborough Towners fortunes considerably. |
