Juniors reveal bright futureSaturday, 17 May 2008 12:07 The Leeuwin-Naturaliste Junior Football season is three weeks old and one thing is clear - the area is teeming with talent that augurs well for the game in the South West.
This year the Dunsborough Towners have tapped into the well of talent in the town selecting three juniors for the Premier Reserve side in Sam Holt (13), Cohen Sadlier (13) and Aiden Greig (15). The women’s team, in the Premier league for the first time this year, have picked up an outstanding performer in 14 year-old Chelsie Winchcombe But it is the talent at the younger ages that is impressive and suggests that careful coaching and encouragement will provide clubs in the LNJSA with a bright future.
Dunsborough is a prime example of the development of the game in this area with two under ten teams, the Dunsborough Daredevils and the Dunsborough Rovers full of exciting prospects, When the two met in the second round of the 2008 competition they fought out a 4-4 draw with both sides scoring some wonderful goals. The Daredevils held the lead for much of the game with the Rockets continuously pegging them back until late in the second-half they took the lead at 4-3. Daredevil striker Marcus Lazic completed his hattrick with almost the last strike of the game to provide his team with the draw that on the balance of play was a fitting result for such a high standard encounter The Daredevils faced a second tough opponent on Saturday in Busselton without the running skills of Connor Woulfe. However, with the likes of “man of the match” Callum Feritty, Marcus Lazic, Tom Brown and Jesse Tognini and Tom Widlake the Daredevils had enough quality to dominate for long periods, especially in the first-half. The bonus for the Daredevils is the performances of the girls in the side who rose to the occasion when substitutions rested the more experiences players in the side. Bussselton stuck doggedly to the task of denying the Daredevils a breakthough and it was the home side that made the break through early in the first-half with a powerful shot that gave goalkeeper Eli Van no chance. A few minutes later Dunsborough equalised through Marcus Lazic with a long range left-foot shot. The second-half was a more even affair with both defences holding the initiative until Ton Brown at last found a chink in the excellent Busselton goalkeeper for the winner. Both sides had their chances to increase the score but just couldn’t find that last telling shot. |
